About Lake Macquarie

The City of Lake Macquarie is the local government regional authority in New South Wales, Australia. It was proclaimed a city on September 7th 1984.

The region stretches almost the entire Lake Macquarie shore excluding only the suburbs of Gwandalan and Mannering Park. It thus includes Wyee, Morisset, Toronto, Warners Bay, Swansea, Nords Wharf and Catherine Hill Bay.

It is adjacent on the south side of the city of Newcastle and is part of the Greater Newcastle Area and borders and indeed includes part of the Hunter Valley Region. It is approximately 150 km north of Sydney and accessed by the very modern freeway of the new Pacific Highway.

Lake Macquarie is the largest coastal salt water lake in Australia and covers an area of 110 square kilometres. It is connected to the open ocean of the Tasman Sea by a short channel.

It is a popular holiday destination with beautiful lakeside settings and recreational fishing, boating, kayaking and water skiing as regular activities on the lake. Sailing and yacht racing are also popular with the lake boasting many yacht clubs cicling the lakes foreshores.
